Let’s “Walk” About It!

While you might think we leave poor habits behind as we age, we unfortunately tend to still take some not-so-good habits with us—like making excuses.

Do any of these excuses sound familiar when it comes to not wanting to exercise?

  • I’m too tired to exercise.

  • I’m bored by every exercise I try.

  • I don’t have time.

If this sounds like something you have said before, Nathan Luoma, DC, chiropractic and weight-loss specialist and our team of professionals at Gulf Coast UltraSlim want to help you put an end to the excuses—and start taking steps to better health as soon as possible.

Just 20 Minutes a Day Keeps Health Issues at Bay!

According to a recent Harvard study, walking at least 20 minutes a day can help to reduce your risk of heart disease by approximately 30-percent! So, if exercise just doesn’t interest you or you feel like you don’t have time, everyone has at least 20 minutes a day to spare for a walk, which can actually be more enjoyable than you think!

Other benefits of taking a 20-minute walk include:

  • Improved mood

  • Increased energy

  • Longevity

  • Lower risk of diabetes

  • Stronger memory

  • Weight loss

After reading these benefits of taking a brisk walk, who wouldn’t want to get started implementing time in their day to take a walk for better health?

Get Walking!

Let’s take a look at some easy ways you can fit in walking throughout your day—perhaps even more than 20 minutes!

For starters, if you are really worried about not having time for up to 20 minutes of walking a day due to your busy schedule, just make it part of your commute!

Do you usually arrive to work early enough to grab one of the closest parking spots to the door? Rather than picking the first, why not park farther away from the door so that you have to walk a greater distance to and from your car each day? In addition, any time there’s a chance to take the stairs instead of the elevator or walk rather than drive to lunch—seize those opportunities! It will only add more minutes to your walking goal without causing you to need to take out any additional time after work for getting your stroll on.

Additionally, if you’re worried about getting bored from walking, switch things up! Try interval-walking a few days a week in order to change the pace of your workout. Or, take your walk from the neighborhood to a local park for a change of scenery!

Finally, make walking a part of your time with your family or loved ones. Has it been awhile since you and your spouse had some alone time to talk? Hit the trails or take a walk around the neighborhood to catch-up while also hitting your 20-minute walking goal.

You know that Fido will always be up for a fun walk around the park, so don’t ever think you have to go at it alone! Make it a family affair so that everyone can enjoy the healthy perks of 20-minute walking sessions.
